Ask a Mayoral candidate?

August 17, 2012 in Article, Featured

VMI MEDIA GROUP, THE VILLAGE: MAGAZINE OF THE ARTS AND ITS OWNERS ENDORSE RICHARD O’BRIEN FOR MAYOR OF BRADENTON!

While The Village: Magazine of the Arts has extended to start covering arts and culture happenings beyond our borders in Bradenton, we still love talking about what is going on in our community. So over the course of the next two months, we’ll be putting out 3 pieces leading up to the November mayoral election here in Bradenton. We’re not taking a stance or supporting a particular candidate, just asking a question that is important to us in the Village of the Arts, and in the Manatee arts community as a whole.

We asked all 3 candidates the same question, WHAT IS THE ROLE YOU SEE OF ART AND CULTURE IN BETTERING OUR COMMUNITY? First up, Democratic candidate Richard O’Brien. Read the rest of this entry →

Luis Aponte

June 21, 2012 in Artist Bio

Luis Y. Aponte, from Carolina, Puerto Rico. Some years ago I made the decision to follow my passion as a career, and I feel blessed that I’m on track to earning a living doing what I love.  I draw and paint in different medias such as charcoal, acrylic, aerosol, pastels, watercolors and others, also I’m developing my skills in other areas such as sculpting and some printmaking techniques. Even though I try to achieve a high level of realism in most of my works I still maintain a pretty diverse style of painting. I’m currently on my senior year of college at Ringling College of Art and Design in the Illustration major, and also apprenticing as a tattoo artist in Trap Ink Tattoos in Sarasota, FL.  I’m available for different types of fine art comissions such as paintings, drawings, or other types of Illustration works; and I’m also available for large scale mural projects.

The 9th avenue mural project

I’ve been thinking a lot about graffiti, street art, public art and the willingness of the city of Bradenton to become a part of it. From our front yards and through coverage in local media we’ve watched the 9th avenue mural and the Mixon mural burst into life. We will see a massive community mural plastered on the side of the police substation on 14th and 14th and art scaling the pillars alongside a freshly cemented skate park at Riverwalk.
